Program Year: 2012

Grantee: National Museum of the Philippines

Grant Amount: US$15,000

Awarding Agency: Public Affairs Section, U.S. Embassy in the Philippines

Project Summary: The Project supported the first phase of conservation works for the Panglao Watchtower – the tallest in Panglao with five stories. Due to more than a century of exposure to the adverse environment of a coastal zone, the watchtower required immediate intervention specifically on the restoration of its exteriors. The scope of work included architectural documentation, structural stabilization and consolidation of masonry walls, removal of vegetation, and repair and retrofit of the roof and structural wood framing. The Panglao watchtower is a unique example of Spanish military architecture and serves as testament to the ingenuity of its builders.

Citation: The Panglao Watchtower is listed as a National Cultural Treasure in the Philippine Registry of Cultural Properties.

Status: Completed in May 2013
