Project Summary: The Project supported restoration and conservation works for the Puerta de Malagonlong (Malagonlong Bridge), which is one of the oldest and longest arched bridges in the country. Built between 1840 and 1850, the 445 foot-long bridge has suffered cumulative deterioration due to the growth of vegetation, vehicular vibration, soil erosion and flooding, and therefore required immediate conservation work. Specific restoration activities included: a) architectural documentation and geological study of the stone materials; b) clearing of vegetation through mechanical and chemical application; c) structural stabilization and consolidation of mortars and masonry unit; d) stone-retaining side walls of the bridge foundation; and e) provision of drainage system.
Citation: The Malagonlong Bridge is one of several historic bridges in Tayabas, Quezon that are listed as National Cultural Treasures in the Philippine Registry of Cultural Properties.
